Safety Studies
CSI has been
conducting traffic safety studies since 1993 with the goal of reducing
life and property loss from traffic related accidents. These surveys
involve visual inspection of seat belt, child restraint devices, and
motorcycle helmet use in order to determine the relative rate of safety
equipment use within the study area.
When a state agency contracts with CSI for a Traffic Safety Research
Study, the CSI Research Center dispatches field observers to various
counties and cities across the study area to collect raw data that is
converted to digital format. The data is then passed on to CSI research
analysts who collaborate with university advisors to prepare final
reports.
Using this meticulous methodology, CSI's traffic safety surveys have a
calculated error of less than 5%. Traffic safety reports generated by CSI
are usually submitted by the contracting agency to a Regional Safety
Program Coordinator for recommendations or improvements to the state's
existing traffic safety programs.
The methodology used by CSI is consistent with pre-approved guidelines
from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which
often provides funding for the research in the form of a grant through the
contracting state agency.
